G. BAKER. Was lost in a snowstorm on 5. 12.1878. and was found 26. 1.1879. He was 68 years old and for several years was sexton at Goathland and the village tailor. On 5th. Dec. 1878 he was having tea at Half Way House when Francis Calvert brought news that he was needed at home to dig the grave of a Mrs. McEacharn. The two started the 10 mile journey back to Goathland at 6 30, despite the poor weather. They stopped at Littlebeck at 8pm, and, as the weather had improved, they re- started their journey at 10pm, having spent some time drinking whisky. Having only gone 200 yards, Baker decided to turn back, complaining of pains in his legs. Calvert returned home and assumed Baker was safe. Eventually parties set out to find Baker and his body was not found until 26th. Jan. 1879, when two brothers, Pennock and Readman Sleightolm found it near the Wykeham shooting house on the moor of Mr. Lloyd. It was strange that Baker had strayed from the road which was well fenced. The body was in a good state and a piece of snow, wedged between the legs below the knees, had an imprint suggesting that one of the searchers had walked across it. Some 50 people collected to carry the body back to Goathland, working in relays to carry it on a board. The ling was set on fire to mark the route and the slow torch - lit procession was a sight never to be forgotten by those involved. They arrived at 8. 30 and placed the body in the church. A verdict of death from exposure to the inclemency of the weather was passed at the inquest, where it was also noted that, in leaving Baker, Calvert was deserving censure. . G. BAKER AGED 68 YEARS. IN MEMOR G.B. WHO WAS LOST ON THE 5 OF DECEM 1878 AND WAS FOUND HEAR ON THE 26 OF JANUARY |

On the18th January 1881 the Brig "VISITOR" ran ashore in Robin Hood's Bay. No local boat could be launched on account of the violence of the storm, so the Whitby lifeboat was brought overland past this point - a distance of 6 miles - through snowdrifts 7 feet deep on a road rising to 500 feet., with 200 men clearing the way ahead and with 18 horses heaving at the tow lines, whilst men worked uphill towards them from the Bay. The lifeboat was launched two hours after leaving Whitby and at the second attempt, the crew of the Visitor were saved. So that future generations may remember the bravery of Coxwain Henry Freeman, and lifeboatmen, and the dogged determination of the people of Whiitby, Hawsker, and Robin Hood's Bay, who overcame such difficulties, this memorial was erected in 1981.
